Why Accreditation Matters

Why Accreditation Matters

To invest in your education is to invest in your future. But did you know that not all programs and institutions provide students with a reputable degree, diploma, or certificate?

That’s right. If a school or program lacks a credible accreditation, your education may not hold much weight.

Discover what accreditation is and why it’s vital to your future career:

What is Accreditation?

According to the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, accreditation is the assessment of the quality of an institution and its programs and services. These assessments are measured against strict standards and assure that an institution has met and is maintaining a high-level of those standards.

Different programs require different accrediting agencies. For example, Ohio Business College’s Medical Assisting diploma program is accredited by a separate agency and must meet different standards than OBC’s associate degrees in Applied Business.

How Accreditation Affects Students

CollegesAndDegrees.com notes that not all accrediting agencies are legitimate. Since the U.S. government does not regulate post-secondary accreditation, false accrediting agencies can mislead prospective students. Because of this, it is important that students confirm the credibility of an agency before choosing a school or program of study.

Employers may not accept a degree, diploma, or certificate that is not approved by a reliable, nationally recognized accreditation. Accreditations show employers that the education received is supported by:

  • Integrity
  • Quality
  • Aptitude
