About the Medical Office Specialist Program

Employment of medical office specialists is projected to grow 23 percent through 2026, according to the Occupational Information Network (O*NET).

Medical office specialists are unheralded professionals who help keep medical offices and facilities up and running. Much like medical assistants, they are crucial members of a healthcare provider’s staff. They are needed in every medical facility, whether it’s an immediate care center, physician’s office or a hospital. However, it is important to note that whereas medical assistants handle both patient care and administrative tasks, medical office specialists focus on the office aspect. Their job description typically consists of tasks such as:

  • Updating Medical Records
  • Arranging Lab Appointments
  • Scheduling Patient Appointments
  • Bookkeeping
  • Medical Billing and Coding

This is far from a comprehensive list and duties may vary depending on the job setting, but it paints a better picture of what medical office specialists do. Medical office specialists are jacks of many trades in their own right.

Job Outlook

As is the case with many other healthcare occupations, medical office specialists are in high demand and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. According to the Occupational Information Network (O*NET), the employment of medical office specialists is projected to grow 23 percent across the United States through 2026. Employment in the state of Ohio is projected to climb 16 percent during that time, resulting in more than 6,500 new jobs.

This increase is due in part to the aging of the Baby Boomer generation. As they continue to age, more people will need medical care. The increase in office traffic warrants more office staff to keep the facilities open and provide optimal care. The fact that more people have health insurance is also a factor in the influx of doctor visits.
