Medical Assisting Bridge for Experienced Students

Applicants with previous work experience as a medical assistant and who are graduates of a non CAAHEP or ABHES accredited medical assisting program seeking to transfer credit into Ohio Business College’s Medical Assisting diploma program (accredited by CAAHEP) will need to demonstrate that they meet the competency requirements of the courses that are transferred. Applicants must:

  • Meet the admissions requirements mentioned above.
  • Have graduated from a medical assisting program (vocational school or college).
  • Have worked full time as a medical assistant within the past five years for an equivalent of two full time years (verification of employment-letter from employer on letterhead)
  • Provide the college with a transcript from the college or vocational school showing the specifics of their program.
  • Provide proof of successful completion of an externship of no less than 180 hours (90 hours devoted to clinical tasks and 90 hours devoted to administrative tasks) at an approved site.
  • Successfully complete an entrance assessment specific to the medical assisting program to determine eligibility for this accelerated program.

Track I – The following courses are required for those with previous work experience as a medical assistant and a graduate of a non CAAHEP or ABHES accredited medical assisting program and scored 80% or better in all three parts of the entrance assessment (a total of 34 credits hours will be transferred in).

Track II – The following courses are required for those with previous work experience as a medical assistant and a graduate of a non CAAHEP or ABHES accredited medical assisting program and scored 65% to 79% in all three parts of the entrance assessment (a total of 23 credit hours will be transferred in).

Graduates of Ohio Business College’s Medical Assisting program can sit for two national certifications, the Certified Medical Assisting (CMA-AAMA) exam and the Registered Medical Assisting (RMA-AMT) exam. Many employers prefer to hire CMAs and RMAs.

Graduates from the Medical Assisting training at Ohio Business College are also eligible to sit for National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) and National Certified Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT).
