OBC Faculty Spotlight: DeAnne Bowersock

Ohio Business College Faculty MemberOne of the most important parts of any school is its faculty. DeAnne Bowersock is an almost 14 year member of the Ohio Business College team.  A favorite of staff and students, she is the IT Office Department Head for our Sandusky, Ohio campus.

As you will learn, her career at OBC began in 2001 as a student. She has continued her education and learning throughout her career. Read more about how she transitioned from student to faculty and why she loves OBC:

1. How long have you been working at OBC and what do you love most about your job?

“I began at OBC as a student in 2001. In my communications class, the instructor gave an assignment to bring in an application for a place I wanted to work. I walked up to the front desk and asked for an application. When it was time to do my extern(ship) hours, I asked if I could do them at the school. I got all of my hours done within three weeks.

I was then hired as a classroom aide for the computer classes. The first class was Word Processing I with Scott Emerick. I then worked in the Web Programming class with Diane Hagan. One week, when [Diane] was not feeling well, she told me that I was lecturing to the class while she sat in the back. I was nervous and scared. The next quarter I was offered my own class – Desktop Publishing. After teaching that first class, I realized how much I loved teaching. Along with my degree, I obtained my Word 2000 and Excel 2000 certifications.”

2. How did you get into your career field?

“I got tired of my teenage son downloading from Napster and Kazaa on my computer and crashing it. I would go to the library to look up error codes to fix it myself. I heard an ad for Ohio Business College and called.”

3. Growing up, what did you want to be?

“I was interested in computers at a young age. My father Delmos worked as an electrical engineer, and helped design some of the components used by NASA. He would bring a computer home from work and let me play on it.”

4. What do you consider to be your favorite hobby?

“It would be a tie between reading and going to the movies. I do read approximately 1000 books a year.”

5. What might someone be surprised to know about you?

“I was 1984 MVP Girls Golf team my sophomore year of high school.”

6. What’s the best advice you would give to aspiring educators?

“Make your students laugh and show them how the material will relate to their lives, their chosen degree, and career.”

7. What would you tell someone who is thinking about attending OBC?

“That we have the best, most dedicated faculty, staff and administration around. I have seen instructors come in on a Saturday or Sunday to get a student or class through what they needed.”

8. What do you wish other people knew about OBC?

“We are putting out certified, quality employees. We have so many wonderful instructors and students alike and they are all dedicated and passionate about teaching or finding a career in their field.”

9. What is the best part about being an OBC faculty member?

“The collaboration between our campuses, the faculty and staff. We are a team and for the nearly 14 years that I have worked here, we can bounce ideas off one another, share materials and help one another out when needed.”
